A properly fitted mouth guard must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, odorless, tasteless, not bulky, and cause minimal interference to speaking and breathing, a critical aspect of any sport.
The American Dental Association estimates that mouth guards prevent approximately 20,000 injuries each year. An athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain damage to the teeth when not wearing a protective mouth guard.
Aside form dental trauma, concussion avoidance is another benefit derived from a properly made sports mouth guard.
A Sports Mouthguard must have excellent retention, fit, and sufficient thickness in critical areas to provide proper protection.
Unfortunately, the word "mouth guard" is universal and includes a large range of products from over-the-counter boil and bite models to the professionally manufactured and custom fit sports mouth guards provided by our practice. GENERIC over-the-counter Sports Mouthguards DO NOT provide the same protection available from a properly fitted VACUUM molded Sports Mouthguard at our office.
A custom made Vacuum Sports Mouthguard designed in our office for a specific athlete and their sport is superior in all major criteria such as; adaptation, retention, comfort, and stability of material.
Please contact us for more information on this critical subject. |
